Lipstick formulas have gone through many evolutions and today we are able to enjoy high quality lipsticks in all colours on the spectrum in various textures at a great price. Have you heard about the technology to create your custom lip colour at the comfort of your own home with the tap of your smartphone?
The L’Oréal group has launched the intelligent device Yves Saint Laurent Beauty Rouge Sur Mesure Powered by Perso, a smart at-home device that allows consumers to create their own personalized lip colors. Perso is a beauty tech device creating personalized skin care, lipstick and foundation formulas, designed by L’Oréal’s technology incubator; Beauty Tech Innovation.
The device can contain three cartridges from the same universe, the colors of which are combined on the top to obtain the desired shade. The device lid functions as a compact case, so you can take your personalized product along with you when you go out.
The device charges via USB-C and has a battery life of at least a week. The cartridges are controlled by radio-frequency identification (RFID), which allows the device to detect the inserted formula, track product consumption and order a new cartridge, when needed.
Perso utilizes color cartridge sets from YSL’s iconic universes of red, nude, orange, or fuchsia. With this innovation, you can create thousands of bespoke lipstick shades with a single touch. The lid of the device functions as a compact luxury case, so you can take your personalized product along with you when you go out.
“Rouge Sur Mesure took more than five years to develop, with the work and input from dozens of beauty, technological and innovation experts, and features various technological feats, including a patented motor system, of which I’m particularly proud. This system is located at the top of the device, which moves and compresses the formula from the cartridges at the base of the machine in an upward motion [versus other devices which push it down] to the dispensing tray above for a clean application. It’s a totally unique feature,” explained Guive Balooch, Global Vice President of L’Oréal’s Technology Incubator.
Retailing at $477, what you’ll get is a device that looks and functions like a Nespresso machine. Using the app, you can choose between 3 creation modes; Shade Wheel, Shade Match and Shade Stylist.
Shade Wheel presents you with a color wheel to select the exact shade you want to create. There are over 1000 pre-set shades for you to choose from using this feature, which is more than anyone needs in one lifetime.
Using Shade Match, you will need to upload a photo of your outfit, shoes, hair, nail polish or whatever that you like and the device will create a shade to match it. While you can submit a photo of any “real-life color,” the device may not be able to reproduce the color, given the current cartridge sets. Even if it can match the color, the shade will still need to be within your cartridge set’s shade family for the device to create it on the spot. Otherwise, you can always save it for later using the My Shade Closet feature.
Lastly, there’s Shade Stylist, which uses a artificial intelligence that recommends coordinating lip shades for any outfit. Upload a photo of your OOTD, and the Shade Stylist will suggest four shade options from within your cartridge set’s color family: two that match your look and two that “clash.” If none of these options suit you, the app also has a Discovery page, which highlights trending shades within YSL’s online community, as well as colors suggested by the brand.
